For now the snow is scarse, in Ljubljana there si actually no snow, but the temperatures are low so there is a lot of ice down here. In Gorenjska region there is a bit more snow, and also dolenjska region has some snow, but for now you dont have to worry for may. I suggest you decide where you will go, the Soča river can be problematic in first part of may cause of melting snow in mountains, but for now it looks good.

Hope that someone will give you more detailed info.

Tight lines !!!

Hi Magnus,

Wasn't it 2006 you were down? I was actually down 2005, first week of May and had a great fly fishing and the weather was really hot.

The winter 2006 was extreme. A long winter with a lot of snow. I was planing to go down to Slovenia that time but re scheduled it to beginning of July instead.

I have been down in Slovenia in May for several years now (except 05') and had a great fly fishing in the Soca region both in beginning and end of the month.

Follow the weather report and the water level reports to se status when you come closer to departure time. I'm planning to go down second week of May when I hope the weather and water will be in perfect conditions for that time of the year.

The Soca region (same licence) gives you the oportunity to more or less always find a river that are fishable due to the river sources are coming from different directions.

Hello Robert! And yes you are right!! (I forgot 2007 , must be because I couldn't go to Slovenia) 2006 it was...+4 degrees and snow when we went down to Koper after realising that Idricja and Unec was unfishable... And that was end of may.

Best regards

Hey Magnus and welcome to our forum board!

And of course, we wish a happy and prosperous New Year to all english speaking visitors too! :beer

Well, so far we´ve had a relatively mild winter with not so much snow, but due to a combination of various weather influences in Slovenia, weather may change rapidly. For this week weather forecast shows stable conditions without snowfall and with temperatures mostly above 0°C.

As Czech said, May is a perfect month for fly fishing in Slovenia, so you shouldn´t worry too much about the conditions... But anyway, I suggest you to get the latest information on water levels here at the forum board, just before your trip to Slovenia- especially if you plan to visit Soca, Sava Bohinjka or Dolinka or oher Alpine rivers which are mostly influenced by the melting snow in the mountains in the spring...

So stay in touch

Tight lines,
Lucky

Yep, that's me....

Were fishing with pike flyes, i.e. flies build up by flash only 16cm long, also other baitfish type of flies. Red and White was the most successful combination of colours.

The guide was fishing with live bait, sometimes the Piraya only took half of it....

Some flies and a small bass:

..and a bigger Peacock bass

Our guide got a turtle on the hook..

I am traveling a lot in my work, normally never bring my rod with me. But since my colleague down in Brazil is in to fishing and we had a weekend to kill we decided to go to a place close to Sao Paulo for some fishing. Even though the fish wasn't as big as I would like it was fantastic to catch a lot of new speices. Also the wild life and the surroundings was magnific.

Still 3½ month to go before I can travell to my favorite fishing place.... Slovenia

Hey Czech,,,

Thanks a lot for your report from the exotic Brasil! It is interesting to see how and which fish species people fish around the world and what methods they use... Piranya looks really dangerous . I think I wouldn´t swim in that river Btw. what was the name of the river?

Tight lines,

Hi,

I actually don't have the name of the river. It was located 500 km north of Sao Paulo in the south of Brazil. Next time I will go down I think that I may take some vacation and plan a trip to Manaus and Amazonas to catch the big Peacock Bass and Pirayas..

A Swedish Brown trout..... or not,

During the first month/s normally a lot of those brown sea trout's taken just after that they have returned to the sea from the rivers. After a couple of weeks they will become silver coloured and after a couple of months they will again be in top condition! Below one caughted by my friend Jeppe earlier in January and the fish was returned back to the sea short after this picture.

Untill now just caughted silver torpedos under the lenght limit (50cm), the big ones will come.. (soon i hope )

Yep Czech, really great sea run brown trout! Congrats to Jeppe and to you for the photo too, of course

So, which flies do you use for catching such fish? Maybe streamers or even glo- bugs? I know they work with steelheads and salmons...

Thanks a lot for sharing this wonderful photo with us and greetings to Sweden,
