Hatches of caddis, mayflies, etc. produce some of the most spectacular trout and grayling fly fishing to be had. If trout are taking insects from the water surface it is certainly the right time to try our dry fly flies. The only thing to be done before that is to capture one of the insects, or if that is not possible, try to identify it from the distance. it is also worth inspecting the vegetation and rocks around the margins of the water, especially if the death adults can be seen. The behaviour of the food insects and o the feeding trout gives the crucial clues as to how to present your artificial dry fly. There are several ways in which trouts feed on insects at the surface. The commonest is the rise in which a resting insect is sucked down as it floats along on the current. The result is a well known and so tempting series of concentric ripples spreading outward from where the insect was sitting before embarking on a tour of the trout´s alimentary canal. J At Slovenian rivers you may expect dry fly hatch from April to November, with its peaks in May and June. Fly fishing with the dry fly patterns may be successful all day long, but usually it gets more intense in the early morning or late evening. It is not of the same intensity at all of the Slovenian rivers.
