Hi,

I've been a member here for a few weeks now and have learned a lot from the site regarding rivers and permits and so on. I have a trip booked to visit Slovenia for a week (30th May - 6th June) and fish Sava Bohinjka (Bohinj Fishing Club) for 3 days, Unec for 1 day and Soca Area (Tolmin Fishing Club) for 2 days. This site has been very valuable for me to find.

So I'd just like to say thank you for a great site. I am fortunate indeed to have the chance to learn from it/you.

Hey Jim,,,

Welcome to the forum board! We are glad that you´ve joined us at this website!

Thanks a lot for your kind words. I try to do my best to improve the content of the site to suit the needs of all flyfishermen- domestic and foreign. Forum board is mostly in Slovenian language, but that isn´t an obstacle for not posting your comments, questions or any other written thoughts you might wish to post concerning the flyfishing in Slovenia, flyfishing tackle, flies, etc. We will try to answer all your questions and help you with advices in order to make your stay in Slovenia as pleasant as it could be

So welcome again to our flyfishing society and please feel free to post your questions to the forum board.

Tight lines (in Slovenian it means "Dober prijem", pronounced: [dober preeyem] ],

Only 5 days now until I arrive,
The weather pages are saying that it will be 27 degrees and that you've had a few thunderstorms, how are the rivers looking? I hope the fishing has been good for you all.

We are hoping to fish The Baca and Idrijca when we are in Tolmin for 2 days or Tolminka and Trebuscica ... we will see how they all look when we get there I suppose. If anyone has areas they think we should go to I'd be grateful for the advice. Not you're secret spot, just somewhere you think dry fly fishing is more reliable.
Until I marked up a map with the areas we can fish near Tolmin I had no idea we would be able to fish such a large amount of water and so many different rivers. I also thought we could do it without a hire car and now I'm not so sure, maybe a hire car will make a big difference for us. On the Soca especially we have a lot of area to choose from, is it very good in the smaller water below Most Na Soci or should we be looking towards Kamno and Kobarid or even above? So much beautiful water so little time...

I have bought books to learn more about the Mayfly and Caddis species you have and learn to speak a little Slovene but I took on too much work recently so my progress has been slow..... maybe I will have to come again to make better use of them

Najlepsa Hvala

Jim

For flyfishing in the Tolmin area, you will definitly need a car. From the start of the reserve in Bovec till the source of Baca in Podbrdo the distance is 70km. It is also impossible to reach smaller rivers via public transport.

Dry flyfishing is more successful on smaller rivers like Trebuscica, upper Baca, Koritnica, Nadiza etc. You can be successful with sedges and also with their nymphs. CDCs can be very useful for graylings but the old partridge and orange can also save your day. However, for marbles only nymphs and streamers will do.

One more warning; the waters are very transparent and normally you see the fish but the fish see you as well. So, you must be extremely cautious while fishing and wading.

In any case, I wish you tight lines!

Thank you samaki
When I realised the scale I thought we would need a car. I like smaller rivers and am bringing a 1wt rod with me so I'm happy to fish dry fly there. I'll have to tie a few more streamers though.
Thanks again

Returned home last night from an awesome trip. Thanks in a big way to some of the help I got here.
We fished Sava Bohinjka for 3 days Unec for one and when we were in Tolmin for 2 days we fished the Baca, Tolminka, Trebuscica and had a few casts on the Soca (near the confluence with Tolminka) and Idrijca (near the confluence with Trebuscica). We caught good fish from them all and even managed a couple of small Marbles (at least I think they were Marbles, one may have been a hybrid????????). It was a fantastic trip, the Tolminka and Baca were out of this world. I'll post a link to a trip report once I get my photos back.
Our guiding was provided by Rok Lustrik who guided us himself on the first day and left us in the more than capable hands of Bostjan for our day on the Unec. I can't speak highly enough of these guys, they were superb.

Thanks to everyone for the help, we will definately return. Without the great fishing the trip would still have been fantastic due to the beauty of the place but when the fishing was as good as it was it just made for an unbelievable experience.

Stunning.

Thanks again

Jim

Hey Jim!

Nice hearing from you again! I am very glad that you had a great time in Slovenia and I know that Rok (forum nickname Lustrik) and Bostjan (forum nickname Hucho) did their best to show you a nice fishing spots and to introduce you the beauty of our country... It is also nice to hear that the fishing was good. Water levels were very low in the past weeks, but last week there was some rain at last, which raised the levels a bit and the fishing was much better than before.

Thanks a lot for your report and we are looking forward to see your pics from the trip too

Dober prijem,
Lucky

Hi Palewatery,

the fish from Baca is a marble and the one from Trebuscica a hybrid. When there are only black points on the gill cover, it is almost certainly a hybrid and when there is a marble pattern, it is a marble.

Nice photos and videos

I wish you further dober prijem

Hey Jim!

Great photos and nice videos! Thanks a lot for sharing them with us. I also like your website. Do you mind if I put the link to it in my foreign links section?

Yes, it would be really nice to explore Scotish rivers some day. I´ve never been to Scotland, but I plan to visit it next year maybe. I heard about great, friendly people, sincere hospitality and a beautiful nature. I am sure I would like it

Thanks again for your post and tight lines,
Lucky

Thanks Samaki I'm sure Darren will be even more pleased to have caught both, even if they were pretty small.

Lucky:
I would feel privelaged if you placed a link. Thanks.
If you do make it to Scotland be sure and let me know and I will help you with fishing information. One early word of advice, if you are a smoker make sure you bring plenty with you. Cigarettes will cost 7 Euros or more for 20 by the time you get here.
Another reason to love Slovenia.......
