Finally, after a few years of plans falling through something came up last minute and I will be able to spend a few days in late July or early August fishing!

I found this site from an old post by luckyluke on Flyfisherman.com that I remembered and dug up. Glad to see you got things going here. :beer

I have a couple questions about fly fishing your country. I will be spending 3 days doing nothing but flyfishing. I would like to spend at least a day, but mabye all 3, fishing the Soca River. I have read on your site that there are only 10 permits available per day. How does this work and how difficult is it to get a permit? Do I just show up at the permit offices the day I want to fish and ask for a permit hoping that there are still some available for that day or can I get them in advance? How about the other streams, is it difficult to get a permit? I will be fishing in the middle of the week, most likely Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

I was also considering fishing the Idrijca or Trebusica or the Tolminka. What stream would you recommend for a first time visiter to your country?

So many questions!

On another note, I wish to learn some of your language before my trip and am looking for some good audio tapes, computer programs, or books. If anyone has one they could recommend I would be appreciative!

Hey Mike and warmly welcome to our forum board!

July and August are usually very dry months in our country with low water levels and very clear water. But this doesn´t mean fishing is bad at that time Soca river with its tributaries might be a perfect choice for that time of the year. If I would plan my own flyfishing trip for three days I would use this itinerary :

1. day -> flyfishing at the upper part of Soca river (managed by the States´s Fisheries Institute) (it is covered by the Institute´s C&R licence)
2. day -> flyfishing at the lower part of Soca river (managed by the Tolmin Fishing Club) and maybe combine it with the lower part of the Baca or Tolminka rivers (one Tolmin FC C&R licence covers all their rivers)
3. day -> flyfishing at the Idrijca river and maybe combine it with the Trebuscica river (one C&R licence covers all- you should buy the same licence as for the 2nd day)

For the 1st day you should buy a daily C&R licence for the Fisheries Research Institute part of the Soca river. As the daily quota is set to 10 licences per day, I suggest you to contact personnel of the Camp Klin few days before and make a reservation of your licence (just in case). Telephone number of the States Fisheries Institute is 003861 244 34 00, telephone number of the Camp Klin (where the C&R licences are sold) is 003865 388 9513.

For the second and third day things are less complicated- you should just buy a C&R licence of the Tolmin Fishing Club which covers rivers Soca (from the Bovec downstream), Idrijca (from the Stopnik village downstream to the confluence with the Soca river), Baca, Tolminka, Trebuscica, Nadiza, Baska Koritnica, Kneza, Ucja, Bela and the lake Most na Soci. All rivers are a first- class flyfishing districts and you may migrate from one to another during the day w/o any problems (one licence covers all). Tolmin FC C&R licence covers all parts of all rivers, which includes regular and C&R parts!

For descriptions of the rivers mentioned before please take a look at the "Rivers" section of this website or search the relevant threads at the forum board- they are mostly in Slovenian language, but you may find some nice photo- reports too And don´t forget to take a look at our gallery

Please visit the Official website of the Tolmin Fishing Club (click here!) where you may get some additional information about fishing on their waters.

I hope this information helps but if you need any further information please feel free to post your questions here

Tight lines or "dober prijem" (Slovenian expression if you want to wish sbd. a good fishing success- used as "hello" in the fishermen language )

Oh, I almost forgot to answer your question about learning Slovenian It won´t be easy but I may help you with that link: povezava [link] . You have to register yourself as a new user and then follow the instructions. It is a kind of an on-line Slovenian language course. If you won´t understand a thing, just click the round ENG (english) button at the bottom of each screen and Slovenian sentences will be translated into English ones

That´s the best online tool I was able to find...

Good luck with your first Slovenian phrases

Thank you lucky. Most helpful.

I have said it before, but the colors of your waters look more like the water of the Caribbean than the trout streams I am used to fishing. I imagine low, clear conditions can make for tricky fishing. I can't wait!

I will have a ton of questions as this gets closer, but the only other one I have at the moment is about lodging. Is there anywhere you can recommend? I am looking for something inexpensive and close to the fishing. Since it will be just me there I do not need anything too fancy, camping somewhere would even be ideal if that is an option. Thanks!

By the way, I ordered Slovene Audio CDs and a grammar book plus dictionary from Amazon. Get ready for some horribly mangled Slovenian in my posts as I start learning.
