I will be fishing for a week beginning of June on the Sava and Soca through a Danish agency called Atlantik. I am Dutch and living in the U.K. Have fly fished many places around the world, but mainly the U.S. (Texas) and the U.K. and some in South America. River fishing and flats fishing to me are the favourites. I speak three languages and keen to learn new ones, but I think Slovenian will be tough! I'm a photographer by profession http://www.hansstaartjes.com. The other passion I have is for an old classic French car called a Citroen DS.

Although I have a fair assortment of flies I'd find it interesting to hear from Slovenian fishermen what works there and if possible to mail order some flies directly to have sent ot the lodge we are staying at in Most na Soci. I'm planning on using a lovely 4 weight Loomis I bought in the U.S. recently with a Bauer 1 reel and floating line.

thanks

Hey Hans,,,

Welcome to our forum- board!

I think you will have a great fly fishing conditions in that period, especially if there will be some rain in the next two weeks. Water levels are quite low in these days, so rain will be a blessing

Those two rivers (Sava and Soca) differ from one another, so it is hard to say which flies would be the best choice. But you may never fail by using some nice blue-dun or natural gray CDC patterns (CDC&elks, F-flies, different variations of emergers or flymphs, tied with partridge and CDC fibers), sedges (brown, black, silver- grizzly), witches, tied on hooks #14-#18, classic hare´s ears nymphs, copper johns, caddis larvae, shrimps (gammarus), but don´t forget to bring your streamers with you- muddler minows, tied with elk, combined with marabou in light gray, dark brown, olive and black colours, wooly buggers, etc., tied on large hooks... In the beginning of June, there will still be some hatches of large mayflies and due to the fact that we had a really mild winter this year, you may expect to be successful by using larger mayfly patterns in early June too (hooks #12 or even #10 1 or 2x long).

At most of the rivers you may buy C&R licence which allows you to fish everywhere without taking fish- if you buy regular licence you are often limited in choosing your fishing areas. Important-you must use barbless hooks at most of the rivers! When using standard hooks, barbs should be pressed off.

Tackle- #5 or #6 weight rod would be the best choice (especially for streamer fishing for larger fish- just for your information- for marble trout in the Soca area, #8 or more is often used with streamers, larger then 15 cm), but your #4 Loomis will probably do its job correctly too (especially if you plan to fish dry fly and nymphs only). Don´t forget to take your chest waders with you.

I hope this information helps you. If you need any further assistance, please feel free to post your questions here. We will be glad to help you. You may also get almost all necessary information (regulations, districts, prices of licences and where to buy them, photos, etc.) about all slovenian flyfishing rivers at my website, under the "Rivers and districts" section...

Tight lines and enjoy your time in Slovenia!

Lucky

p.s.: "The Goddess" is really a nice car and so are the pictures at your website
