I visited last summer Slovenia for the first time and absolutely fell in love with your rivers and nature! Beautiful scenery with rich and clean nature! The rivers were also clear of trash, but full of fish. Thus, I am planning two trips to Slovenia this summer and need some advice on both trips. First trip is going to be on the first week of June. I will be fishing the Angling Club of Tolmin Rivers for most of the time, but last two or three days I would like to fish Unec. Is the date alright for Unec or would there be another better choice, perhaps Krka? There are plenty of apartmas etc… in Tolmin area, what about Unec? What about fly selection? My second trip is bit trickier, since it’s going to be on July. I have heard that the temperatures can be quite high, therefore I have planned to go to the upper Soca and Lepena. What do you think? Could it be a tad cooler and shadier in the upper parts? I also would like to visit a totally another stream during this time but cannot decide which one would be “good” at this time. Little help, please? I would also appreciate any help with the fly selection as well. I guess it’s bit different than in early June. P.S. Where on upper Soca is the so-called Goldfish bowl? Thanks a lot with your help! [ Edited Saturday 02 February 2008 - 06:48:20 ] |

Hey Boo and welcome to our forum board! ![]() You will have a great time in the beginning of June at the rivers, managed by the Tolmin Fishing Club, so prepare for the best ![]() ![]() July may be quite dry in Slovenia with lower water levels...But it is not always like that- I remember some really fantastic Julys, especially at the Alpine rivers. Soca and Lepena rivers would be a great choice. But you have to know that the July and August are holiday months in Slovenia, so a lot of turists come to the Soca region to sunbath. There is also increased rafting and cayaking activity at that time, so mornings and evenings are the best choice for fly fishing then. Yes, it is definitely cooler by the Soca river in the summer months! If you want to try something else, I may suggest you to explore smaller streams, managed by the Fishing Club of Tolmin (if you will be staying in the Soca region), especially if there will be enough water to fish them comfortably. Thats also a good method to avoid rafters and sunbathers ![]() ![]() I am not sure if I know what do you mean by the "goldfish bowl". Some tip maybe? ![]() If you need any further assistance please feel free to post your questions here. Tight lines, Lucky [ Edited Tuesday 15 January 2008 - 22:40:39 ] |

Thank you Lucky for your answer! I will certainly explore the small streams as well, actually I totally fell in love with one of them last year. This year I will return and try Tolminka as well. The early July is difficult and the other tourists don't help either. Are the rafters and sunbathers also in the uppermost part of Soca managed by the Research institute/ Government (the C&R part)? Do you think it won't be so crowded as the lower parts? Are there totally different rivers in Slovenia, which do not "suffer" from overcrowding? What about Unec,Krka and Idrijca at this time? The small rivers are what I would really like but I fear that they "run out of water" in July. What do you think? Thanks again! |
